Saga again and back to Fukuoka

On our way back through Saga we visited their famous Yutoku Inari Shrine.

Look at these mysterious abstract shapes. There's something appealing about them.
This is whale meat and blubber for sale. Big black chunks of meat. It looked like it was dried. More like jerky than rubber.
Lots of fox statues around. Inari is the Japanese god of foxes.
According to Japanese myth, foxes love inari sushi, and the tofu skin has pointed ears like a fox..
The type of udon with big slices of inari on top is called kitsune udon. (Kitsune means fox.)
Even on January 5th, the new years crowds are still pretty thick.

 A very fancy shrine.

More foxes.

Unagi-don for lunch. Eel is big in Saga. I don't remember unagi being this expensive in Vancouver.
Four big eel meals.
Fukuoka ramen. Down here in Kyushu, tonkotsu (pork bone) ramen broth is popular. It's very rich. I can't find it too often up in Hokkaido, where shoyu (soy sauce) and miso broths are more popular.
Pod hotel for the last two nights. With just a curtain at the foot of the bed, it's not exactly enclosed. The beds stack two high, luggage goes underneath. Well, it's enough room for me. The ceiling is still high enough that I can sit up in the bed.
