Arrived in Sapporo on Saturday evening for a great enkai with other ALTs.
There were over 25 of us there.
After that, I went to see the nighttime light shows.
The big, wide snow sculptures like this one would have animation projected onto them with music.
The cute kangaroo talked to the kids.
And then, fireworks.
Lucky me, I got to the Vocaloid sculpture just in time for the show. I read online that this is one of the big things to see at night.
Miku's guitar is shaped like Hokkaido!
I don't mind admitting I'm a sucker for this stuff. I feel like in the current year, it's not considered as weird for people to see a concert for fictional singers.
HORSE
I think this is an NHK news announcer.
This food stand caught my eye. The big chestnut cooker was shooting out jets of steam.
It's like a huge steam gun.
Re: Zero and Snow Miku. Snow Miku is just all over the place.
Here's a big snow sculpture of the Helsinki cathedral in Finland.
This sculpture is a collaboration between JR, the train company, and HTB, a Hokkaido TV station. There's a bunch of Hokkaido products in there, plus On-chan, the HTB mascot.
His eyes are the letters o and n.
OK ON NO
There were a bunch of smaller sculptures of company mascots.
Vegeta from Dragonball.
Totoro, who is practically mandatory at every snow festival.
Some of the cute blobs from Sumikko Gurashi.
And a Minion, that old standby.
I'm told this is a character on TV who has a talk show. Sounds weird, but she shows up in several sculptures around here.
Here's Ariel.
I love the little Sebastian.
Spongebob's looking as terrifying as ever.
"We are all part of one big family; that is what is most important." A whole bunch of animals all getting together. The dinosaur on the right really makes this one.
"Night Parade of One Hundred Demons."
Those fat ghosts with the tongue and one eye are so silly.
Here's a Gundam.
And here's that mascot character again.
Pulling that Dreamworks face.
Alolan and Classic Recipe Vulpices.
USA man again.
I don't know who this is but he makes me think of Postman Pat.
elephant and walrus
Doraemon and some little dudes
Pikachu and Eevee advertising their new game.
Giant Cup Noodle! That's great.
A big Star Wars. You probably noticed things are getting dark. The festival closes at 10pm, so they shut off all the lights. The rest of my pictures from this night are probably not that great. I came back and tried again on Sunday though.
Here's another Snow Miku.
A second Totoro.
Kirby riding his warp star.
Pikachu again.
Pumba looking a little scary.
Snow Miku again.
An owl and a sheep.
Dinosaur head.
Here's a kappa.
This is an angry influenza virus. He's struck down several people at my schools so far.
And finally, a big happy Buddha. I love this guy.
